I started making jewelry ever since I was a young girl. Like most kids, every holiday I would get a craft kit, and always included many crafts and beads. At no point two decades ago did my young self think I would be a jewelry entrepreneur. In 2016 I had a pearl choker during a trend craze that I absolutely loved because it was a little different than the iconic trend. It had 3 freshwater pearls and knots in between each one to separate each pearl and it was my favorite necklace I think I have ever owned. Sadly, it eventually broke and I couldn’t find a replacement of this necklace anywhere, it just didn’t exist. My dad said, “don’t worry about it, we’re going to fix it” and from there we went to a few different craft stores and just like that, my necklace was fixed and good as new. It was at that moment, I got this lightbulb idea to start selling them. To create something new and unique, I decided to do one freshwater pearl and then I found a bunch of different colored leather cord, so you could pick anything from a yellow pearl necklace to a purple pearl necklace. I immediately created a website on July 30th, 2018 and I made my first ever online sale on madebycaitlyn.com.
Eventually in 2019, I discovered you can buy craft supplies online and there are more dedicated stores that the craft stores couldn’t offer and I decided to rebrand my business toward trendy jewelry. I was always selling trendy jewelry, but then again I was all over the place and would buy beads on sale and make random jewelry. I didn't have a niche or branding and I was just making and selling without a plan. Finally in February 2020, I decided to follow my heart and jump into uncharted territories and rebrand my entire business to be the beach brand everyone knows it as today.
In August of 2021 I started posting tutorials on how to wear my jewelry to TikTok and Instagram and that's when the magic happened. The outcome was hundreds of comments on my videos that brought new meaning to my products, life and my business. Left and right people were commenting on how my jewelry was more than just a momentum of the sea. Consumer feedback validated that it was a wide range of adjustability and actually inclusive so anyone can wear it. The adjustable knot as a closure in replace of a clasp is really accessible for those with arthritis, tremors and mobility issues. These viral videos helped me reach and tap into new audiences which really changed the trajectory of my brand and gave me a new meaning to Made by Caitlyn. I didn’t realize how empowering and impactful my brand was and it just really made me rethink everything. I’m so happy to not only create people's little pieces of the sea but also for creating jewelry that actually makes a positive impact in many people's lives.
